Therapy Dogs
Feb. 5th, 2006 06:49 pmEach year I look for a new volunteer opportunity to work on part time in addition to the time I put in with Habitat for Humanity (I love working on the building sites). I hadn't decided what to do this year, but something that came up on one of the basset hound chat groups I've joined gave me an idea I love. Pet therapy groups are volunteers who take animals to hospitals and group homes. The simple little joy brought by these animals (something all pet owners understand) means a great deal. And bassets are an ideal breed for this activity because they are mellow, love human company, prefer outright human contact, and are small enough to be 'non threatening' in stature.
I'm quite excited about this little plan - I am very confident that Sebs will enjoy something like this and could do well with it. And I like the idea of being able to share his rather loving little self, because he can certainly cheer me up. Pets and their unburdened adoration are soothing at best, complete mood lifters on the right day. I've found a local group based a few miles from my home I can work with. I need to get Sebs passed by them first, so wish him luck!
