White Sox that is. Our family's vac. home is Tucson -this is the home my fab & missed grandfather built ages ago - and so for Pring Training our teams our the Diamondbacks and the White Sox. This year watching all the pre-season work, we got very excited over the White Six for once, as they had some *amazing* talent, particularly in the pitching staff. So it is exciting to see them where they are, and seeing the team we watched pull together with so much promise in March make it to October and take out the formidable oppontents of the Red Sox. I admit I am torn as to their next step - while I would love to see them take out the New York Yankees, I really don't even want the Yankees to make it past the Angels. Then again, I am more certain of a Sox victory over the Angels than one over the Yankees. Admit I am paying only minor attention to the National League, but still have a soft spot for the Cardinals as LaRussa heads them.

Work only escalated this week - every time I have one brush fire out another pops up. The flare-ups this week were all *major* issues to be dealt with ASAP. Q*($&!@90! I will say the #1 issue that got my goat was something that was fuled by a TWIT who said something so uncalled for and irresponsible I actually yelled when I heard about it. By Thursday am I was felled with a migrane from it all - but I rallied to come in after taking a few hours to let the meds kick in. I arrive to have the leader of our new hospital operations team tell me that there was an argument over the sizing our our operating rooms. I will skip techinicalities - it comes down to this: a doctor (quite appropriately) asked "How do the architects and capital planners (that is me!) decide how many rooms we need?"

Totally appropriate question, which I can explain in detail and in lanugage that the MD understands AND accepts as appropriate.

I am not in this meeting, however. Some twit from the architect team answers with "I think they use a magic 8 ball!"

My already dying migrane ridden head popped when this was relayed to me.

I spend MONTHS working day in and day out to build credibility with the physicians, learning the ins and outs of medical operations, learning how they work, busting my ASS to make certain we are doing the right thing....only to have this ASSHOLE (sorry) make this 'joke' and undermine everything. The docs in the meeting were understandably unhappy and spent the day on the phone complaining to the Chief of Staff. He sends me an urgent message.

WTF??! Not going into mundane detail I will say this - Chief of Staff and I work very closely and he has total faith in my numbers (which he reiterated this AM, and I am grateful for). He also understands why I am the 'messenger of doom' and have a firm line to hold on issues. Other docs get this too, even if they don't like it. At least they accept I am "on their side" which helps. And the chief architect also said something very nice to me today about the whole issue of the dance I have between the sides, so I was happy about that. To quote - "Christine, I wanted to tell you; you and I may debate a lot and I can push back on you a lot, but in comparrison to the experience I am having with (another hospital design team) I love you." That made me crack up, but also thank him. The role of the 'law enforcer' sucks at times, so I was totally amused by that comment. Yeah, I guess that this a horn toot. Don't think that it means we don't all butt heads - it means we all butt heads in an inteligent fashion is all.

All in all, a very sucky week - even my unflappably British boss was looking like he wanted to smack people by the time I left today. I only have thanks that what is mainly driving him mad is something I don't have to be part of this year, due to being swamped elsewhere.

Off to art class in the am - I worked a bit on my main project, but mostly sketched oddles of ideas this week. At least I get 4 totally uninterupped hours to play 100% tomorrow with the painting. Will resist to develop the idea that - I swear - was inspired buy the cricitcal care pathflow we outlined today for treating people having a major heart attack who need a heart stent. That is not an acceptable separation of 'church and state' in my current world.
